International Day of Older Persons - 1 October 2025

International Day of Older Persons - 1 October 2025

This October, we join Age Concern organisations across New Zealand in recognising the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, a global celebration of the contributions of older people, to raise awareness of the challenges they face, and encourage communities to take action to support ageing well.

Join us this October to:

  • See the person, not the stereotype.

  • Call out people's unconscious bias towards ageing.

  • Treat older people with real respect - no talking down.

  • Be kind, patient, and friendly.

  • Stand strong against abuse and neglect.

  • Reach out and connect - no one should feel alone.

This year, we are highlighting the importance to working together to create a way of living that recognises the people who have made our communities - the older people in our communities. Everyone can make a difference today, simply by waving hello to a neighbour or calling an older friend for a chat. These connections help shape our wellbeing and strengthen the communities we live in.

Older people are vital to the social fabric of New Zealand Aotearoa, as workers, carers, volunteers, mentors, and community leaders. Their experiences and everyday interactions foster a sense of belonging across generations and help build inclusive, resilient communities.

As we age, staying connected remains just as important. While later life can bring new opportunities, it can also present challenges such as retirement, changing health, or loss. That's why it's essential to create environments where older people feel valued, supported, and included.

Let's work together to build a society where every older person is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve and help us build a more inclusive Aotearoa New Zealand.
