Responding to demand: Supporting continued access to Total Mobility

We have made changes to how Total Mobility Scheme applications are managed.

The Total Mobility Scheme (TMS) remains an important and well-used service, supporting older people living with significant mobility challenges to stay connected to essential services and everyday life. Administration and assessments are delivered locally for people aged 65+ by Age Concern Nelson Tasman on behalf of Nelson City Council, and provided free of charge to those who are eligible.

In recent months, demand for this service has continued to grow. This sits alongside increasing pressure on alternative transport options more broadly, as well as rising demand across our other programmes and services.

To respond to this, we have moved to an appointment-based system for TMS applications. This change allows us to set aside dedicated time for assessments and processing, ensuring applications are handled consistently and within a reasonable timeframe.

Clients will still be supported to access the service, and those unable to travel to our office will continue to be considered for home visits where eligible. The intention is not to limit access, but to manage the service in a way that remains workable as demand increases.

We recognise that many people rely on this service, and that any change to how it is accessed can take time to adjust to. We appreciate the patience and understanding of those using the service while we work through this change.

Taking this step allows us to maintain a high level of service, support staff wellbeing, and ensure that this targeted transport subsidy continues to reach those who need it most.
